Update on Trail Projects

SWEPS Trails has been working on the section of the Trans Canada Trail which follows the watershed all the way north from Shubie Park in Dartmouth to Truro. Of course, we haven’t been able to deal with all of that geography yet, but the first 5 km. of trail along the western shoreline of Lake Charles is complete and the 2 km. of trail under Hwy 107 and Hwy 118 is also open. That portion is called the PortoBello Connector and has a new access bridge from the Shubenacadie Canal Commission’s land at the Inclined Plane.

A few years ago, we started from Rocky Lake Drive in Waverley and have completed 6 km. of the trail back along the western shoreline of Lake William, hoping to meet the PortoBello Connector in the middle. That section also includes several distinct wetlands where we install interpretative panels explaining the diversity and benefits of wetlands. Part of the finished portion of the Lake William Trail includes a fantastic bridge across the CN Rail line which is a sight to behold! So far, the major land owner, Dexter Construction has been very cooperative but we still have other land ownership issues to deal with before it joins up.

We also are meeting with the NS Dept of Transportation regarding a trail bridge crossing the Aerotech Connector where it crosses Holland Road in Wellington. It will be a great trail once the government make a final decision on the new highway.
