Annand Brook Restoration

[Google_Maps_WD id=”5″]

SWEPS has started stream restoration in Annand Brook for their 2019 Adopt a Stream project. Annand Brook is located near Monte Vista Road in Enfield, Nova Scotia, Canada. The brook was tested and has “sweet water” which means the brook is perfect for supporting salmon and trout! And in its natural history it sure did. The river used to be so flush with gaspareau that you could barely see the the river bed. So what happened?

The stream was used in the 1900’s for logging operation which means it was widened and straightened. The embankments of the river was reinforced with large boulders and an hydropower dam was built. The forestry operations left and the dam crumbled but the environmental damage stayed. Until 2019 when the SWEPS team stepped into the brook.

Every morning SWEPS goes out into the stream and enhances the meander. We build rock sills and deepen pools. We remove old metal pasture fences gnarled in the trees. It’s hard work but the little fish are cheering us on. We can’t wait to bring this river back to its former glory!
